Building your own community of like minded people not only gets us out of the studio but also boosts our creativity. Whether a virtual or a real life friend, relationships make a difference in our quality of life.

Finding Your Tribe in the Artistic World

As artists, we often find ourselves in a solitary space, working away on our projects in silence. But what if I told you that building a community of people who understand us better because they've "been there" and understand the challenges we face, like fellow artists, or other 'zebras,' people affected by Ehlers Danlos Syndrome (EDS). I believe that surrounding ourselves with "like minded people" could significantly enhance our creative lives, make us better artists and we wouldn't feel so alone in this world. This concept resonates deeply in today's interconnected world where we can forge friendships not just locally but globally, thanks to the internet.

The Beauty of Virtual Friendships

With various platforms at our disposal, connecting with other creatives has never been easier. Social media, forums, and online workshops have transformed the way we share our art and discuss our creative processes. By engaging with other artists online, we gain insights and inspiration from diverse perspectives, leading to personal growth and richer art. The sense of camaraderie that emerges from these interactions provides a safe haven for our souls, where we can explore our vulnerabilities, share our triumphs, and seek advice without fear of judgment.

I recently stumbled across this video about an artist that happens to lives close to me and yet until I saw this video, I had no idea she was practically my neighbor. Although our art styles are very different, we share many commonalities that give us an opportunity for connection, for friendship and for a deeper understanding of community. I've made an initial contact with her and plan on dropping by her studio soon. I'd love to hear her experiences as an artist, her highs and lows of an artist's life and all the facets of being a creative person.

Build your own dreams

Or someone else will hire you to build theirs. Here is how you can take action – starting today.

No Time Like the Present...

So, why hesitate? We have the chance to nurture these virtual friendships into fulfilling real-life connections. Organizing meet-ups, attending local art events together, or simply grabbing a coffee with a fellow artist or zebra can have lasting impacts. Instead of waiting for the perfect moment, let’s take proactive steps. The journey of building a community of artists is not just about enhancing our skillsets but also about forming bonds that nourish our souls. Let’s get out there and create our safe havens, one connection at a time!

A little farther from home but a doable day's drive from my home to Petosky, Michigan I discovered this woman who opened a gallery for local artists. Do I sense a road trip in my future?
